How to ... Use a Classic Razor!

A straight razor has been a traditional method of shaving for over 300 years. These razors were originally made in Sheffield, England, and are constructed with the blade folding into the handle, which themselves have been designed from a range of materials including resin, wood, bone, and even mother of pearl. These razors are extremely sharp and must be used with extreme care though, that aside, some would argue that this is the only way to shave.

Shaving with a classic razor has its own characteristics and at Taylor of Old Bond Street we have shared these steps with customers for many years. Follow our step by step guide for the closest of shaves and will leave you well-prepared for the rest of your day.

1. Wash your face thoroughly leaving it slightly damp.
2. Apply pre-shave oil or gel before you start lathering to soften and protect your skin.
3. Lather your face with a badger shaving brush and our shaving soap or cream, producing a fine, creamy lather which helps to soften the beard.
4. First, to sharpen the blade, hang the leather strop on a secure hook or towel rail and pull it taut. Using the leather side first, apply the razor with the blade-side facing downwards and push upwards using firm pressure towards the top of the strop. Rotate the blade with the sharp side now facing upwards and pull down towards the end of the strop always keeping the blade flat. Repeat the action for approximately 10 times and repeat on both sides.
5. Now you are ready to start shaving. Place the blade on your face at a slight angle and pull your skin taut. Slide the razor down your face without pressure and repeat this action on all areas initially in the same direction as the beard growth, and then against.
6. Rinse your face with cool water and apply a moistened alum block to any nicks or cuts to help the skin heal.
7. Towel your face dry and apply an aftershave cream or gel for a soothing effect.
8. To care for your razor, dry it thoroughly using a towel and oil the hinge and blade areas. This will help prolong the life of your razor and prevent any rust from forming. Rinse your shaving brush in warm water, shake and leave it to dry hanging upside down.
